Description

The PNG graphics file format is a commonly used format for storing 2D images, which can be highly compressed by the use of a palette if the image has a sufficiently low number of colors (256 colors in general). The PNG file is then further compressed using the DEFLATE compression algorithm to ensure small file sizes that are fast to download.

PNG files are seen as the logical successor to the GIF image file format and was devised in the mid-1990s as a superior format to GIF. PNG files are generally used for company logos, icons, and other non-photographic image content. Saving a digital photo in the PNG format will create a much larger file than an equivalent JPG image, hence the PNG format being unsuitable for most digital photo content.

Description

Introduced by the W3C organization in 2001, the SVG file format grew to become the standard web file format for vector-based 2D images and is supported by the majority of modern web browsers. SVG files are XML-based text files containing 2D vector elements such as paths, simple shapes, colors, and more.

The SVG format itself, while primarily a vector format, can include raster images as well as text. Due to their vector-based format, SVG files lend themselves very well to website company logos and icons. A compressed format of SVG also exists, which uses the extension SVGZ and employs the GZIP compression algorithm.

PNG Image to Vector SVG, How Does It Work?

Our tool analyzes your PNG file for shapes, outlines, and text, which it then recreates in a vector format. Raster images (Bitmaps) such as PNG can store a lot of detail; however, for high-definition tasks such as printing, a vector-based format such as SVG is better suited due to the ability to enlarge the file without losing any detail, something that cannot be done with the PNG format files.

Options are available to specify or remove a background color if the source PNG image does not contain a transparent background. Our tool can attempt to determine the background color automatically, or you can manually specify the background color to remove.
