Create vector image files with our easy-to-use and free tool. Our tool lets you upload a EMF (Windows Enhanced Metafile) file and, from this, create a vector-based AI (Adobe Illustrator) file that you can then download and edit within vector file editors or use for high-definition printing applications. If you have multiple EMF files to convert, then our tool can also batch convert EMF files too. Currently, our tool supports up to 25 conversions at a time.
Options are available to specify or remove a background color if the source EMF image does not contain a transparent background. Our tool can attempt to determine the background color automatically, or you can manually specify the background color to remove.
Here are three simple steps to create an AI file from a EMF file.
The Mode setting is used by the tool to inform it of the best way to vectorize the image by providing it with clues as to the type of image being submitted. The Auto mode attempts to find the most suitable settings for the image uploaded. There are, however, other options to help fine-tune this process, which we explain in more detail in the Tool Options section below.
With this setting, it is possible to reduce the inclusion of small holes within the final vector file caused by small, contrasting areas of the source EMF file, which can be useful in situations where the source image has not been optimized for use with the tool.
Use this value to merge similar colors; this is useful if the image is of low quality. A higher number can help reduce the effects of anti-aliasing in the EMF image.
When this option is enabled, the tool will automatically attempt to make the background of your image transparent.
Manually specify your image background color rather than our tool trying to automatically work it out.
If the tool is unable to identify the background and you know the background color, you can specify it here.
This value can be adjusted to control the background removal tolerance. The higher the value, the more background is removed.
A higher value is useful for creating smoother results if your image is anti-aliased.

The EMF file format is the successor to the legacy WMF image format, capable of storing both two-dimensional raster and vector graphics. The WMF format was introduced by Microsoft in 1992 as part of the Windows 3 SDK and has evolved over time with new features until being replaced by the EMF format.
EMF files contain 32-bit data and are similar in nature to SVG files in that they can store both raster and vector image data. The format is used within versions of Microsoft Office and can be opened with a limited number of graphics applications.

The AI file format, or Adobe Illustrator Artwork, to give it its full name, has been around since 1987. Developed by Adobe, the AI file is a vector-based image format initially created to encompass the EPS and PDF formats.
The format has continued to be improved since its initial release and is widely supported today by many well-known vector-based graphics programs, such as CorelDRAW and Paint Shop Pro.
First click the "Upload..." button, select your EMF file to upload. Select any configuration options. When the EMF to AI conversion has completed, you can download your AI file straight away.
We aim to process all EMF to AI conversions as quickly as possible, this usually takes around 5 seconds but can be more for larger more complex files so please be patient.
We aim to create the most accurate conversions with our tools. Our tools are under constant development with new features and improvements being added every week.
Yes, of course! We do not store the EMF file you submit to us. The resulting AI file, once created is deleted 15 minutes after upload and the download link will expire after this time.
No. All our conversion tools process your EMF file on our dedicated conversion servers, meaning you can use our tools on low-spec computers, laptops, tablets, and mobile devices and receive your converted AI file quickly.
Yes! Our EMF to AI tool will run on any system with a modern web browser. No specialist software is needed to run any of our conversion tools.
Yes. Although you can use an Ad Blocker, if you like our EMF conversion tool please consider white-listing our site. When an Ad Blocker is enabled there are some conversion limits on some of our tools and processing/conversion times will be longer.
Yes. When you have converted your EMF to AI, there is a "Feedback" option that you can use to let us know of any issues you encountered when converting your file.
