The AAC format is an audio file format created in 1997 to be the successor to the popular MP3 file format. The format has over the years grown in popularity and is now the standard audio format for most applications, including mobile phones, internet music streaming, and video game consoles, amongst others.
The format forms the standard audio component in the MPEG-4 video file format and offers better quality and compression compared to the MP3 format. It also features increased numbers of audio channels and a larger frequency range. The format is supported by the majority of audio editing applications.
