The CR3 file format is a custom image file format created by Cannon for use with their more recent digital cameras. It has been in use since 2018 and succeeded their previous CR2 version, which it replaced in 2018.

CR3 files store raw image data in a different format than the previous CR2 format, meaning they cannot be used with software that expects the CR2 format, so special imaging software is needed to open these files.
