Image to Model Tool Updates

Date: August 21, 2026

We have been busy adding many changes throughout July and August, changes we hope will make our conversion and other tools even more useful, and we are adding lots of new features in the process. This is the first of several articles we will publish to explain the improvements that have been made and how to use the new features.

Image to Model

The original tool for converting a heightmap or other suitable image into a 3D model via either the heightmap or extrude process has gotten a redesign, allowing 3D model previews to be generated in real-time, allowing you to apply settings and see their effect straight away.

Along with this, we have added more options for controlling the depth of 3D heightmap models that are created. With new options like Depth Curve you can control how depth values are calculated from the raw pixel greyscale values. On top of this there is also the new Variable Depth setting that allows you to specify pixel greyscale values and what you would like the 3D depth to be, allowing total control over how depth 3D model depth is determined.

When using the Extrude mode, there is now the (experimental!) option to apply a Fillet or Chamfer to the edges of the 3D model. The effectiveness of this option is very much determined by the complexity of your image, so this option should be treated as experimental for the time being.

The original Base option allowed a simple square base to be added to the created 3D model; we have now enhanced this with additional options to allow for Rounded Corners and Padding. The top and bottom edges can have a Fillet or Chamfer applied as well. Along with these options is an option to add a Keyring Loop to allow you to easily turn your 3D model into a keyring.

New Image to Model Project File Format

Along with the additional settings, we have added the ability to save the current settings to the new ITSX file format, allowing you to save and later load/edit your designs. If you have an ITSX file, you will be able to use it with our other tools, such as converting it to other 3D formats like 3MF and viewing it online.
