The AVI multimedia file format is a proprietary format developed by Microsoft in the early 1990s as a means to store video and audio data for its Video for Windows software. The format has evolved over time to incorporate new features to match those of rival formats.
Although the AVI file format enjoys support from most popular video editing software, the format does have its limitations. Other multimedia container formats, such as MP4, offer better compression ratios, higher-quality results, and better compatibility with older players.
